History of Alexandria
On the shores of the Potomac River, Alexandria has been essential to Virginia since its founding in 1749. The town focused on shipping crops via the river due to its proximity, and it quickly became a major trading city. It was one of the biggest ports in America in the 18th century, including international imports. Part of the city was used to create the District of Columbia in 1789, making Alexandria the next-door neighbor to the center of our government. Despite Virginia seceding from the Union, Alexandria became a strong supply center for Union forces during the Civil War. Today, Alexandria remains historic in its buildings and character.
The City Today
Alexandria is on the northeastern edge of Virginia, along the Potomac River. Located just a few miles south of Washington, D.C., it’s a city known for its rich history, lovingly maintained throughout the centuries, and beautiful waterfront locations. It’s bordered by both Washington, D.C., and Arlington, VA. It’s also located near Mount Vernon, George Washington’s home and a hub of 18th century history. Packed with museums, restaurants, cobblestone streets, and thriving businesses, Alexandria is an excellent place to visit for families, couples, and individuals.
The climate in Alexandria is defined as a humid subtropical climate. This means hot and humid summers and mild to cold winters. In the summers, temperatures reach the high 80s on average, perfect for going out on the water. The winters average temperatures in the low 40s, cold enough for a chill but not too cold to explore the city. Similar to much of the East Coast, the average rainfall is about 40 inches per year, but due to the mild winters, it snows very little, only about 14 inches per year.

The Old Town Farmers’ Market is a large draw; it’s the oldest farmers’ market in America that’s been continuously run.
