Oral Sedation in Northern Virginia, VA

Oral sedation in Northern Virginia makes dental patients more comfortable.

There’s no reason to let fear or discomfort about a dental procedure stand in the way of better oral care. Whether you suffer from a severe gag reflex or just general dental anxiety, your Dental Associates professionals can help you get the care you need.

Our experienced sedation experts will ensure you remain relaxed throughout your dental visit. We offer a wide range of conscious sedation methods, allowing us to choose the right one for the patient and the procedure about to be performed. You’ll get the quality dental work so essential to your oral health without the usual discomfort or anxiety.

What to expect with sedation dentistry.

Dental Associates of Northern Virginia has staff licensed in a number of sedation techniques. In most cases, you will remain conscious and able to freely communicate with our staff throughout a procedure. You’ll simply feel less stress and anxiety as a result. We will choose the most appropriate type of sedation method from the ones that follow.

Oral sedation to help you relax.

Oral sedation, a common sedation method, helps you reach a comfortable state while remaining fully conscious. You will be asked to ingest a mild narcotic, either in pill or liquid form, prior to your procedure. The liquid form of sedation is faster-acting and may be ingested just before a procedure, while a pill form may need to be taken before you arrive at your Dental Associates dental office.

How oral sedation works.

During treatment, your vital signs will be closely monitored to ensure you remain comfortable. In most cases, the effects will wear off shortly after the procedure. Even so, you should bring an adult along to make sure you get safely home afterward.

IV sedation for better control over dosage.

For those who experience acute anxiety or a gag reflex, oral sedation may not be effective. These patients often require IV sedation. If you fall into this category, our licensed and trained sedation experts will administer either a single or combination medication via an intravenous (IV) device. Once the medication takes effect, you will enter into a relaxed state, even though you will be fully conscious and capable of communicating at all times.

How IV sedation works.

The IV ensures greater control over the amount of medication you receive. Your dentist will be able to immediately adjust the dosage so that you get just the right amount to stay relaxed, yet fully awake. Once the procedure has been completed, you will need an adult present to see you safely home.

N2O sedation, also known as nitrous oxide or laughing gas.

N2O is a safe, effective sedation method that has been used in dental offices for decades. It’s the method most dental patients know best. However, many refer to it as laughing gas.

How N2O sedation works.

The N2O sedation method involves placing a mask over the patient’s nose while the patient breathes normally. The nitrous oxide (N2O) usually takes effect within minutes, keeping the patient in a relaxed state throughout a dental procedure. Once the procedure is complete, the effects of the nitrous oxide should wear off quickly, leaving the patient alert and, in most cases, ready to drive home.
